Responsible for all audio and visual operations at AVE — multi-format media capture and streaming for broadcast, leading technicians and clients through concerts, breakout rooms, podcast streaming, and pre/post production. 10-WEEK COURSE BREAKDOWN

Fundamentals through capstone — in order.

This course covers the fundamental principles of audio and video production — sound design, video editing, lighting, and workflow — and funnels students through mentorship with working industry professionals.

WEEK 01

Intro to audio & video production

Overview of the AV industry, production roles and responsibilities.

WEEK 02

Audio fundamentals

Frequency, amplitude, and waveforms; microphone types and applications; intro to recording.

WEEK 03

Video fundamentals

Resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio; camera types and lenses; composition and framing.

WEEK 04

Signal flow

Signal flow concepts, intro to audio mixing software, and a hands-on radio ad project.

WEEK 05

Lighting techniques

Why lighting matters, key/fill/backlight, practical lighting-setup exercises.

WEEK 06

Video editing basics

Editing software overview, cutting/transitions/effects, a short video ad project.

WEEK 07

Production workflow

Pre-production planning, production-phase shooting technique, post-production overview.

WEEK 08

Using AI in production

AI tools for production assets and workflow, plus an intro to chromakey.

WEEK 09

Capstone project planning

Develop a project proposal — goals, technique, community impact — with peer feedback.

WEEK 10

Capstone presentation

Present final projects to peers and instructors, with group discussion and feedback.

What you'll need.

Editing & recording
  • Editing software (Apple Creator Studio)
  • SM58 microphone
  • Any camera with manual settings and 1080p — your phone works
  • Headphones and an audio interface
Before your first class

Bring something to take notes with — pen and paper, a tablet, or your phone. After reserving your seat, download the reference textbook and watch the prerequisite video — both are required before class one.

Classes run twice a week for maximum participation, with a make-up option if you miss a session. Capped at 10 students per class.
